Advantages-Disadvantages Hybrids

ev-hybrid-vehicleThe Advantages and Disadvantages of Owning a Hybrid Vehicle. Because of ever-increasing fuel costs, electric vehicles or hybrid cars are popular due to its main premise to reduce the gasoline expenditure of motorists. These cars are powered by two or more energy sources: an electric motor which gets power from an on-board battery (rechargeable energy storage system), and an internal combustion engine.

Using an alternating current for a standard electrical outlet, users charge their hybrid car batteries for eight to ten hours each day. With the growing demand of people who want to cut down fuel costs, hybrid vehicles are becoming a popular vehicle choice for consumers.

Before shelling out hard-earned money, here are some advantages and disadvantages of owning a hybrid car:

Advantages:

1. High amount of gas mileage – Gas mileage is something hybrid car owners don't have to think about. Because these cars are powered by electricity, it cuts down the costs of fuel for about 300%. A normal car will cost $0.12 for each mile, while a hybrid will only cost $0.03 per mile.

2. Free parking – Because hybrid cars do not emit poisonous smoke on its tails, some American states are rewarding environment-friendly car owners with free parking. Aside from saving money from low gas costs, imagine the amount of money owners will be able to save annually with free parking!

3. Tax deductions – Aside from free parking, those who decide to buy hybrid cars also get huge tax deductions and warranties which usually cover the battery power pack and the motor for a certain number of miles and years. These are major advantages that can further rev up the money-saving effects of buying a hybrid car.

Disadvantages:

 1. High cost – Like any other modern form of technology, hybrid cars have a huge price tag. It usually costs $5,000 – 7,000 more than an average car.

2. Hazardous in collisions – Because of the high voltage and metal hydride and/or lithium ion batteries used to power hybrid vehicles; there is a high risk of getting electrocuted once the wires get exposed during collisions and accidents.

3. Performance – One main disadvantage of hybrid cars is its lack of speed. Although not necessarily a bad thing, but because hybrid cars have slower acceleration, these cars are usually used for local driving and not for long distance traveling.

4. Maintenance – The daily charging of on-board battery packs and the cleaning of the engine add up to all the other forms of maintenance a hybrid car needs. Other than that, its spare parts are also hard-to-find and costly. Because hybrid cars are cost-efficient, there is usually a waiting line for interested buyers- not a good thing if you need a car right away.

Based on all the points discussed above, hybrid cars are truly the leading future car in a sense that it will dramatically reduce a lot of costs. Because of the long-term financial savings as an effect of getting one, it is advisable to buy a hybrid—only if there is no need to travel from coast to coast or use the car for dangerous activities like high-speed driving or drag racing.
