Fiat’s Four-Door Crossover - Fiat 500L
Mercedes-Benz USA's smart car may not have been the booming success many had hoped for, the Fiat 500 may just be? Manufactured by the Fiat Group/Chrysler, is on a mini-roll. In less time than it takes to find a smart car center, they've opened over 125 dealerships and continue to think smarter. Realizing a one trick pony may have a long history within a circus is something to avoid. Subsequently, to ensure the Fiat 500 isn't one, they've announced plans to sell what they say will be a well-designed "B-segment" city-friendly four-door Crossover. Called the Fiat 500L, yes the L stands for large. Similar to their Fiat 500, its platform is original and expressly for the United States market. Production is scheduled to begin this summer at the same plant used in the 80's to manufacture the much maligned Yugo. You remember the Yugo? Its owner manual came with a bus schedule!

One of Zenn's most interesting accomplishments before going out of business was the announcement of its highway-legal ZennCity EV. Projected to have a top speed of nearly 80 miles per hour, the amazing thing about the ZennCity was the manufacturer's claim that the car would be able to fully charge in only about five minutes.

When it hits the open market in 2012, Prius plug-in owners will be able to plug in to a standard 120-volt outlet to charge the lithium-ion batteries and take off down the road without concern, because once the charge is drained, the gas engine kicks in to take them as far as they need to go, so they do not have to sacrifice the ability to take a long road trip for the green driving option that electric vehicles provide.

Hybrid Electric Vehicles For Dummies...It's good to see so much recent mainstream press about the electric car, as opposed to the century or so of publicity we've been inundated with about gas powered transporters. You know, Tin Lizzie's, Oldsmobile's Hydra-Matic transmission, the Ford Pinto, OnStar technology. I would much rather read about battery packs and alternative energy and recharging stations and electric cars -- it makes me feel like I'm actually living in the future instead of dreaming about it.
