Although scooters are beneficial to the environment and the average person's finances, the use of scooters is starting to be met with controversy. People who live in heavily trafficked areas such as New York and Los Angeles can use scooters to avoid the traffic. Because the scooters run on electricity and not gasoline, scooter owners will not have to succumb to high gas prices.

In addition to these personal benefits, scooters are great for the environment and may help reduce dependency for foreign oil. Because these scooters run on electricity, no toxic emissions are released into the air.

Because gasoline is not required to power an electric scooter, there is no need to purchase or use it. If enough people buy scooters or electric cars, there will be no need for foreign oil or drilling.

Despite the benefits of electric scooters, there are many disadvantages of owning an electric scooter. Although scooters do not require gasoline, they need to be charged for 4 to 8 hours. In addition, you need a power outlet to charge it.

They also are not capable of traveling very fast or long distances. The scooters are only capable of traveling 10 to 20 mph and can usually travel 25 miles per charge. The scooters can also easily be stolen and leave your body exposed to the elements and potential hazards.

The trouble with electric scooters has little to do with the scooter itself. They are not defective or unsafe. The problem is that many people are using them in an unsafe manner.

Because the scooters leave your body exposed to hazards such as rain, heat and bigger vehicles, you run risk of being injured if you happen to be struck by another vehicle or slide through a puddle.
